An update on the Connecting Leeds Corn Exchange scheme

Here’s what’s coming up in the next few months…

Corn Exchange
An artist impression of how the area around the Corn Exchange might look once complete

We’re writing to update you about work happening around the Corn Exchange and surrounding streets. This is part of the wider city centre improvements that will transform travel across the city.

New Market Street

The footpath will be paved on the east side (outside Boris & Co) by the end of March 2021. The paving up to Central Road and Kirkgate will be complete by the end of May. There will be wide temporary walkways in place during this work.

Most of the bus shelters on the west side of New Market Street will be removed by May and the new bus stops will be installed by July 2021. The paving work in this area will start at the end of March and will be completed by July 2021.

Lower Briggate

We’re prioritising certain areas of work on Lower Briggate in preparation for the easing of lockdown restrictions on 12 April.

The work here involves footpath renewal and footpath widening outside Viaduct, Fibre, Popworld and the Stone Roses bar. The work in these areas will be completed by the beginning of April.

We’ll set up a new work zone further down Lower Briggate at the end of March. The work here also involves footpath renewal and footpath widening and we’ll continue working in this area for six to eight weeks.

Work will then continue on Lower Briggate until autumn 2021.

Upper Call Lane

Upper Call Lane will close permanently up to Crown Street junction in May. Traffic will continue to run on New Market Street and will now be permitted to turn right onto Kirkgate. The current bus stops on Upper Call Lane will be closed, and their services will be re-routed on the bus stops on Lower Briggate and Duncan Street.

The work in this area involves footpath widening outside the Corn Exchange, with new seating areas and trees being planted. This work will be completed by January 2022.

Vicar Lane

We’ll start paving the footpath on Vicar Lane between Greggs and Fish Street on 22 March. This work will take around six weeks to complete. There will be wide temporary walkways in place during this work.

The paving between The Hip Store and Kwik Tan will be complete by mid-March.

We’ll set up a new work zone on the market side of Vicar Lane at the beginning of April. The work here involves widening and replacing the footpath with new paving slabs and will be complete by August 2021.

There will be wide temporary walkways in place during this work. This work will take slightly longer as there are two trees being planted.

Kirkgate

Work will start on Kirkgate in April 2021 on the northern side (outside Leeds Accommodation Bureau). This work involves footpath renewal and footpath widening.

We’d like to thank you for your patience and co-operation while we carry out this work. Please be assured we’ll work hard to ensure work is done safely and as quickly as possible.

Einformation: Crime in Adel

We have received today the following information below from Cllr Barry Anderson which may be of interest to you.

“I have been approached by a number of residents to raise concerns about the above issue. In essence the points they made were:

1.     I am writing in regards to the crime in Adel over recent months and the lack of police presence.

2.     I received a WhatsApp message detailing a women being followed on Bedquilts. She called the police who went out to search for the male.

3.     On Saturday, a 69-year-old woman was mugged for her handbag and dog. Fortunately, the offender got away with just the handbag.

4.     Adel is becoming a crime hotspot and greater police presence is needed to keep the area safe.

5.     Dogs are now seen as such valuable assets driven by the demand for pets since lockdown. I am linked to groups up and down the uk who are reporting daily occurrences of such crimes with thieves going to extreme lengths to steal much loved family pets and trade them on without any conscience for the devastation they leave behind.

Set out below is the response from the Police to the issues raised.

I have attached the leaflet the Police provided to me re dog thefts.”

“I have looked back over the last few days but have been unable to locate a report to the Police of a female being followed on bedquilts ?

I can however confirm an incident occurred on Saturday involving a female whilst she was walking her dog. The incident is currently under investigation but I can confirm that the “WhatsApp Group” message is not correct, as no property was taken from the victim.

In respect of a previous query in relation to “dog theft spikes” on the 25th February with an advice leaflet produced by Dog’s trust and I can arrange for this to be sent again if helps?

Despite this latest incident, which is the first of its type , the recent crime figures do not show any spike in crime in the ward however the team are aware and will continue to provide visible reassurance across the ward area.”

BILLY FLYNN – WARD COUNCILLOR NOTES – DECEMBER 2020

STOP PRESS – SPECIAL EDITION – ADEL PHARMACY SAVED

Excellent news. The surgery and pharmacy site on Long Causeway has a new owner and the pharmacy is staying where it is. The news is less clear on the future of the surgery building but it is hoped it will be used for wellbeing purposes to complement healthcare in Adel although it is still early days. More on this when the future is clearer.

This really is very welcome news for everyone in Adel and really emphasises the importance of retaining and saving all our local services, whatever they are. We must use them or lose them. It is particularly important during these awful times with the Covid -19 pandemic.

On the back of this really good news I hope you all have a safe, happy and joyful family Christmas. With the even better news of the vaccination programme already started let us all hope for a much better and safer New Year and a return to normal family life.
